‘The Kizhi Necklace’ exposition sector.

Several architectural monuments of the Kizhi Museum are located in the vicinity of Kizhi Island, on such neighboring islands as Bolshoi Klimetsky Island, Volkostrov Island, Eglov Island, as well as on the continental part of the Zaonezhye Peninsula.

These are mainly chapels which were initially located in the neighbouring Kizhi villages known from the 16 th century. They are often called the chapels of ‘the Kizhi Necklace’, which is a metaphor comparing the buildings located around the architectural ensemble of the Kizhi Pogost with a string of a precious beads.

This unique collection of chapels was gradually formed during 18th — 19th centuries.
