The contest is held within the festival «The Illusions of the Old Town»

The residents of small towns at all times used to notice the negligence, awkwardness and lack of professionalism of their compatriots and often used them as a subject for painting of this «caricatures». The word ‘caricature’ has the Italian origins and means ‘to load’.Before the October revolution (1917) the caricature was a very popular kind of art, caricatures on different subjects were published in newspapers, magazines and on the leaflets.

The contest is aimed at recalling the former popularity of caricatures.

The caricatures on the themes from town social and everyday life: business, education, social care, city transport, amusements and reflecting the problems unsolved during many centuries, will be accepted for the contest.

Contest requirements:

• The age of participants is not restricted
• only previously unpublished works are valid for entry
• the caricature size must not exceed A3 size paper (297×420 mm). You can use any technique (including computer graphics).

Attention! The caricatures that have the political or indecent connotation, about the war, violence, cruelty or hatred or those that offend the honor and dignity of their prototype will be disqualified!

Contest terms:

The contest participants have to fulfill the application form, send it as well as the contest work by e-mail (holiday@kizhi. karelia.ru) or in a letter (paper variant version or on CD, DVD или or Flashcard) till April 15, 2010. The application form is available on the museum web-site of the museum in the section of Information category (http://kizhi.karelia.ru)).

Criteria for evaluation:

• conformity to the contest theme and rules;
• urgency and creative presentation of the problem;
• quality of realization

The contest will run from February 15, 2010 till April 15, 2010.

The judges will determine the winners on 1 st of May 1, 2010. The winners will be awarded with receive the diplomas and the trophy prizes during the festival «The Illusions of the Old Town» on the Day of the City, June 26, 2010 which will take place in the historic quarter of the city (Russia, Petrozavodsk, Fedosovoy str., 19).

The best contest works are planned to be placed on the museum web-site of the museum and be published in the first Caricature magazine in the Republic of Karelia.
