The Island of Volkostrov

The island is situated 1 km to the north of Kizhi Island.

Low cereal and herb meadows with rare plants, various blue bells and other species are of great interest. Meadows alternate with stands of junipers, elm-trees and other tree species. Low places are swampland with a variety of officinal herbs (marsh cinquefoil , bod-bean and others). A grass bog of the island is a habitat of some rare plants of Karelia. The island is famous for its legendary amethysts that were found in the 18th century in cavities of boulders. They were used to make fashionable and expensive jewelry.
