Investigations in the regions of the Republic of Karelia @kizhi
Kizhi archaeologists are working not only in the territory of Kizhi Island and its neighborhoods but also in the territory of the Pudozh, Seguezha and Prionezhie regions.
In 2003 the works on the study of the Stone Age – the Early Iron Age monuments were renewed in the Seguezha region in the neighborhoods of the village of Nadvoitsy. Three new sites (Grudino 2, Voitsky Waterfall 1-2) were discovered. The materials of these sites are stored in the Kizhi museum funds; the works have resulted in two articles published in the “Kizhi Reporter” and the Tver archaeological collected volumes.
In the Pudozh region the works have been carried out since 2005 and have focused around the historic village of Pjalma. A new archaeological complex of the Stone Age – the Early Iron Age containing about a dozen of ancient settlements has been discovered. Projecting shafts of seven monuments (Pjalma 1-7) have been explored.
In 2003-2006 investigations of the Early Neolithic monument Garrison Besovets 2 with a “pure” complex of sperrings ceramics have been conducted in the Prionezhsky region. More than 400 m2 have been excavated, a considerable collection of pottery and stone tools has been obtained.
