Works fulfilled during the preparatory period in 2008
Measures in section I and also items II.1-II.9 in section II: these had been completed before and were mentioned in our reports for the previous years. This is why the present report includes only the measures taken in the reporting year i.e. 2008.
II.10 Elaboration of working documents for completion III and IV stages of Complex Restoration.
Elaboration of working documents for completion III and IV stages of Complex Restoration was going on. Chief designer «Spetsprojectrestavratsiya», Saint-Petersburg, (Chief architect is Rachmanov V. S.) continued project works in collaboration with subcontracted organizations. These project works concern reconstruction of the foundation, restoration of floor (XVIII-XIX centuries), reassembly of the church log framework, restoration of window and doorway elements.
There have been done observation on the work and the engineering supervision of mounting metalwork for lifting and suspension of the engineering restoration tiers of the church log framework and transverse foundations for the lifting’s supporting structures. On the whole, design organizations did their work satisfactorily, but the effective field supervision of the works in progress was quite difficult because Kizhi Island is remote from Saint-Petersburg and system of payment to designers was defective. In this connection the questions of adapting manufactured metalwork to real-life assembly conditions on the site were most often decided by the contractor SKF «Alekon» in collaboration with the customer i. e. representatives from the museum’s department of restoration, and further on approved by the designer’s representatives; the changes made were included in the production project. Operational experience in 2008 proved once again that the designer’s representatives should be present on the site, especially during the completion stage of the installation and when adjusting the system of lifting and suspension of the engineering restoration tiers of the church log framework. This is critical for taking quick expert decisions on the complicated technical issues that arise during the work. The completion of the installation and adjustment of the system of lifting and suspension of the church log framework is the most important restoration event on which depends the successful implementation of Complex Restoration on the whole. This is why the approach to the issue of field supervision and engineering support should be appropriate, taking into consideration that the question under discussion is the object of the World Heritage of UNESCO, a genuine gem of Russian wooden architecture.
II.13-II.14 Manufacture and assembly of the equipment for lifting and suspension of IV-VII engineering restoration tiers of the Church of the Transfiguration.
The last lot of the metalwork for lifting and suspension of engineering restoration tiers of the Church of the Transfiguration was manufactured in the first quarter of 2008. During the manufacture they took into consideration the possibility of matching the metalwork newly produced by the project 286/06-KM and the metalworks produced earlier by the projects 145/03-KM, 81/04-KM. Thus, all necessary metalwork for lifting and suspension of engineering restoration tiers of the Church of the Transfiguration had been produced, installed or prepared for the installation by spring, 2008. Some of the components should be delivered in 2009 according to the agreement with the contractor.
The competitive tender for the installation of lifting equipment and suspending the log framework of the Church of the Transfiguration was won by SKF «Alekon» Co Ltd (Director Savelyev A. A.). The contract stipulates the installation, adjustment and testing of the lifting system and the equipment for suspension of all the engineering restoration tiers within the log framework during 2008–2009. The completion phase is the implementation of lifting and suspension of engineering restoration tiers within the church log framework. The volume of work stipulated by the contract for 2008 includes the following:
- mounting the reinforcement system at level 15,90 m according to the projects 81/04-KM, 286/06-KM;
- manufacture of supporting transverse foundations intended for backing the system of suspension log framework by project 101/07-КЖ;
- installation of the additional metalwork for lifting and fixation of engineering restoration tiers of the Church of the Transfiguration by project 286/06-KM (approx. 65% of the volume);
The following works will be implemented in 2009:
- completing the installation of additional metalwork for lifting and fixation of the engineering restoration tiers of the Church of the Transfiguration with the foundations under the studs for suspension;
- adjustment and testing of the whole lifting system and suspension of the engineering restoration tiers of the Church of the Transfiguration;
- lifting and suspending the engineering restoration tiers of the Church of the Transfiguration.
As soon as the manufactured equipment was delivered on Kizhi Island in July, 2008 SKF «Alekon» Co Ltd started the installation. Taking into consideration the works on matching the constructions by project 286/06-КМ with the equipment mounted earlier, the volume of installation works equals to 55 tons. The installation of the equipment which features large overall dimensions and weight, performed in the straitened conditions inside the church requires outstanding qualifications of the specialists. Moreover, as the result of the unevenness of the church log framework, many of the equipment units had to be installed after taking an individual master form beforehand and fitting the units into this form, and only afterwards the units could be installed on the object. Installers from SKF «Alekon» Co Ltd have quite the appropriate qualification and work experience for the conditions mentioned.
The works on reinforcing constructions at level 15,90 were done in July-August. This opens up the opportunities for keeping the installation on the lower tiers of metalwork going. In August-September the installation works were done at levels 9,10 and 6,30 which provided the space system for lifting and suspending the log framework inside the interior volume of the church.
Photos Similar constructions were installed on the exterior diagonal walls which defined the location of transverse foundations for the studs intended for suspending log framework along the diagonal walls of the lower octahedron. The mentioned foundations (10 items) were manufactured according to ППР 151/08 in September-October. After 7 days of curing the foundation the studs intended for suspending along the diagonal walls of the lower octahedron. Thus, the volume of work planned for SKF «Alekon» Co Ltd in 2008 was fulfilled during July-October. The works were performed by the team of installers headed by N. N. Bardashev under the leadership of foremaster M. Y. Birin. Meanwhile, all of the preparatory and completion work was performed by the Museum Carpenter’s Center (Chief is Kovaltchuk A. L., foreman is Kalinov A. S.) Direct supervision of the works and engineering supervision was done by the head engineer of the Department of Restoration Kuusella A. S. Engineering supervision was done by the project authors of the system: chief engineer SKF «Stroyrekonstruktsia» Rasha I. K. and the main specialist of the company Dachnovskaya N. A.
The conservation of object was accomplished by Carpenter’s Center after completing works planned for 2008; constructed foundations and affected grounds were sheltered and provided with heat insulation.
The completion of works on preparation the engineering restoration tiers of the Church of the Transfiguration for lifting procedure in 2009 will open up the possibility to start disassembly of the lowest, VII-th engineering restoration tier and restore its elements in the Restoration Complex.
