Festival “Transfiguration”. Photo reports in the Kizhi gallery
New photo albums dedicated to the “Transfiguration” festival have appeared in the Kizhi gallery: the Feast of the Transfiguration and the Creative session of bell ringers. One can trace back the chronicle of the passed feast days, see the faces of the guests and workers of the Kizhi museum and watch the emotions of bell ringers — participants of the “Revival of the lost traditions of the Russian North.Bell score of the Kizhi Parish” project with the photos made by Oleg Semenenko.
New Kizhi Museum routes
In 2014 the Kizhi Museum tour package was substantially updated and expanded. From now tours around Kizhi Island, which include Kizhi Pogost and pieces of wooden architecture beside the architectural ensemble also cover other monuments situated on the Island. Museum routes are adapted for various groups of tourists. There is a shortcut tour (for slow groups) and tours for those wishing to combine aesthetical impressions and healthy active leisure. Also the Museum developed thematic tours that meet the needs of people with different preferences: tours of the most beautiful Kizhi Island views, tours allowing listen to old tunes, try the local cuisine, interactive tours with the opportunity to participate in various workshops.
The photo report on the restoration of the Transfiguration Church in 2013 was published
They complemented the photo report on the restoration of the Church of the Transfiguration at the Kizhi Museum web site. There were some photos added representing the works performed in spring, summer and autumn of 2013 and those made during the installation of the 16-meter log into the refectory wall.
Winter travel programs on Kizhi Island
Tourists will see a surprisingly beautiful snow-covered island, enjoy the silence and harmony of Karelian winter and make an excursion “Traditional culture of the Russians of Zaonezhie”. Depending on the chosen program visitors get acquainted with traditions of tea-drinking in peasant’s house, see the unique process of restoration of the Transfiguration Church in the Restoration Centre, and take a part in the folk games and street amusements. An exclusive program of two-day stay on Kizhi Island includes all parts of the winter programs.

The annual expanded report on the activities of the Kizhi Museum on conservation of the World Heritage Site “Kizhi Pogost” in 2013 has been published on the museum web site.
Exhibition “I swaddled in infantees, I wrapped in belts” (December 27, 2013 — March 30, 2014)
The exhibition is dedicated to the Olonets province maternity and childcare culture in the late XIX century. The visitors will get to know what where the baby's first toys 150 years ago, get acquainted with the birthing rituals, the customs of baby names choice, the traditions of dealing with guardian spirits protecting the baby's wellbeing. Our visitors will learn the methods of swaddling , will be offered to have a rest in a rocking chair and listen to the lullaby, and also to watch the film about traditional children's games.

The English version of the “Traditional crafts” and "The villages of Kizhi Volost" parts is now available on the Kizhi web site. It contains the Video catalog of traditional crafts, farming and carpentry and contains Information about Historical settlements around Kizhi Island with the Map of Kizhi Volost.
Exhibition “On the Verge of Christmas Eve” (December 20, 2013 — January 19, 2014)
The exhibition is devoted to the traditions of Christmas and New Year celebration.It invites a viewer on a journey back centuries ago from the modern way to celebrate New Year with its constant companions — Santa Claus, Snow Maiden, Snowflake Girl and Christmas Bunny — to the end of the XIX century when western traditions of Christmas celebration, such as telling Christmas stories and giving presents, penetrated into the urban environment.
Exhibition “Traditional art of Pryazha Karelians” (October 18 — December 15, 2013)
The exhibition introduces the traditional culture of the Pryazhinsky region (Karelia), different types of folk art that existed in the territory inhabited by Pryazha Karelians. All the exhibits bear the imprint of ancient world views of the Karelians based on the amazing interweaving of pagan and Christian traditions.
Exhibition “With love to Valaam” (October 11 — December 22, 2013)
The exhibition presents paintings and objects of decorative and applied arts reflecting the beauty of the famous island in Lake Ladoga and the life of the ancient Holy Transfiguration Valaam Monastery.
Exhibition “Orthodox churches of Russia” (October 01 — December 31, 2013)
The exhibition represents 27 works depicting churches of Russia. The needlewoman embroidered them to the 300th anniversary of the Church of the Transfiguration on Kizhi Island.
The exhibition “Orthodox Churches of Russia” is running from October 1 to December 31, 2013 in the Information Center of the Kizhi Museum (10a, Kirov sq.) from 10.00 to 17.00 on weekdays. Access is free.
Exhibition “Three Totems” (September 13 — October 13, 2013)
The exhibition introduces the traditional culture of the Mari people, describes the uniqueness of their world view, customs and mythology. The exhibition includes women’s and men’s costumes of the Mountain, Eastern and Meadow Mari, national musical instruments and household items. We invite you to take part in the “Three totems” program that includes an excursion around the exhibition with game tasks and a master-class on making a ward rag doll.
Exhibition “All colors of the “Kizhi palette” (August 29 — September 22, 2013)
The Kizhi Museum presents a children’s exhibition of creative works made by the participants of the “Kizhi palette” studio. The author of the exhibition is S. Petryakova, the head of the studio.
The exhibition “All colors of the Kizhi palette” is interactive. Visitors will be offered to perform some creative tasks, to participate in master-classes on making a lime bast toy “Sun Horse”, to make unusual gifts with their own hands (paper cards in color graphic technique) and amulets of threads. Besides, young visitors of the exhibition will learn what a linocut is and will even try to do it themselves.
The Kizhi Museum invites you to participate in the festival “Illusions of the Old City” (June 29)
June 29, 2013 the Kizhi Open Air Museum holds the 5th festival “Illusions of the Old City”. For three hours the quarter of historical building will turn into a historic theater. Events of a century ago will be brought to life here in the day of the festival.
Horse-drawn ride around the island of Kizhi!
The Kizhi Open Air Museum invites you and your children to take a horse-drawn ride that will bring a lot of positive emotions and a boost of healthy energy.
The main exposition of the Kizhi Museum can be seen on foot but during a horse-drawn carriage ride one can look into the remotest corners of the island.
The English version of the “Archaeological heritage” part is now available
The English version of the “Archaeological heritage” part is now available on the Kizhi web site. It contains Information about the first archaeological findings on Kizhi Island and in its surrounding area, the history of archaeological investigations of the Stone Age — the Modern Age monuments, archaeological surveys carried out by the Kizhi museum expedition on the territory of Karelia.
Exhibition “The Host of Heaven and the Host of Earth” (April 30 — September 08, 2013)
The Kizhi Museum presents an exhibition on the results of the All-Russian contest of children’s art works. The exhibition introduces the legendary protectors and patrons of the peoples of Russia: heroes of folklore and epic songs; great soldiers and military commanders; family, home and personal protectors and patrons. Visitors can listen to epic songs performed by Karelian storytellers, take a virtual trip to the past, learn the secrets of heroic strength, play, solve interesting creative tasks, watch cartoons and take part in festive programs and workshops.
Exhibition “Northern lace of Vladimir Balandin” (April 19 — May 19, 2013)
The Kizhi Museum presents a solo exhibition by Vladimir Balandin. The exhibition introduces the works of the artist who masters the ancient art of bone carving. Vladimir Balandin is presented not only as a talented carver but also as an artist. His graphical works will certainly evoke positive emotions.
Kizhi: The annual report to UNESCO World Heritage Center
The annual report to UNESCO World Heritage Center was published on Kizhi Museum site. On Kizhi Museum site you can get acquainted with annual broadened report, which deals with measures of maintenance of the World Heritage Site - Kizhi Pogost in 2012. The most important event of the year was the continuation of restoration work on the Church of the Transfiguration. The lower part of the monument was restored during the winter and set on its original foundation, and the church started to grow skywards!
Russian Shrovetide festival in the Kizhi Museum, March 11 – 17, 2013
The Kizhi Museum invites you to participate in the Russian Shrovetide festival program that will be held in the quarter of historical buildings (the city of Petrozavodsk) from the 11th to the 17th of March. You will get acquainted with traditions and rites of this wonderful folk festival, make a festive souvenir with your own hands, watch the performance of the Petrushka theater, participate in traditional Shrovetide entertainments and dress the Shrovetide straw doll.
Exhibition “Church architecture of Zaonezhie. XX – XXI cc. Photo view” (February 06 — April 21, 2013)
The exhibition features over 100 works by photographers from Finland (Kuopio) Erkki Olavi Pellikka and Pentti Juhani Puustinen. In the exhibition one can see images of 45 monuments of church architecture located on the territory of the present-day Medvezhiegorsk and Kondopoga regions of the Republic of Karelia.
A new convenient schedule of the Kizhi Museum exhibition halls
Working hours of the Kizhi Museum exhibition halls in the city of Petrozavodsk are changed! From January 28 the exhibition halls are opened until 20.00 on Monday, Wednesday and Friday!
Exhibition “Folk shipbuilding in Karelia. Traditions and modernity” (December 28, 2012 — April 14, 2013)
The partner exhibition project of the Kizhi State Open Air Museum, the National Museum of the Republic of Karelia and the Karelian Maritime Center “Polar Odyssey”.
Items from the Kizhi Museum’s collections tell about the history of navigation and photographs show boats of different types and acquaint with modern masters. The funds of the National Museum of the Republic of Karelia are represented by navigation objects, unique models of boats of the 19th – 20th centuries and extinct fishing gears. The “Polar Odyssey” Maritime Museum tells the story of its expeditions.
Exhibition “The Christmas snow is whirling, heralding a miracle…” (December 21, 2012 — January 27, 2013)
The exhibition is devoted to the upcoming merry festivities — Christmas and New Year. You will get acquainted with the traditions and symbols of Christmas in Russia and Western countries, learn about the Advent wreath, an arc of light, the crèche, Christmas mummers and more.
And, of course, you will enjoy the beauty of a dressed Christmas tree, glitter of Christmas decorations and wonderful drawings of students of the “Kizhi palette” children’s museum studio.
The exhibition is accompanied by the New Year’s cartoon parade.
